NetInstall

NetInstall requires the transfer of a single file on your web server. The script it contains will download the Piwigo archive from piwigo.org, then extract its content and launch the installer.

The NetInstall process may not work on your web server, depending on the level of features provided. If you can't make it work, just switch to the manual installation guide instead.

Step 1 - Download The NetInstall script

Download the NetInstall script.

Step 2 - Transfer the NetInstall script

Transfer the NetInstall script on your web server with any FTP client.

Piwigo team recommends FileZilla as a FTP client software, because it is free as Piwigo is, and compatible with both Windows and Linux.

Start FileZilla and fill the following connection settings with the information given by your web hosting provider:

  • Host
  • Username
  • Password

Click on the Quickconnect button. You are now connected to your web server.

Select the piwigo-netinstall.php file on your hard disk drive and transfer it to the web server [fig A].

[A] Connect and transfer

Step 3 - Configuration

Once the NetInstall script has transferred, go to its web address with a web browser, for example http://example.com/piwigo-netinstall.php

Choose a directory name for your photo gallery on your website [fig B]. By default, Piwigo will be installed in the directory piwigo. If you leave the Destination field empty, Piwigo will be installed at the same place you transferred the NetInstall script.

[B] Choose a destination for your gallery

Run the “Retrieve and unzip Piwigo” action, and then “Install Piwigo now” see [fig C].

[C] Successful Piwigo download

Now comes the MySQL database settings and the webmaster account to administer your gallery [fig D].

[D] Installation page

Fill in MySQL database connection settings, as given by your web hosting provider:

  • Host
  • User 1)
  • Password
  • Database name
  • A prefix for Piwigo table names 2)

The webmaster account creation requires:

  • An account identifier, chosen by you
  • A password you have to enter twice, for checking
  • Your email address, so that visitors can contact you

Run the “Start Install” action.

Step 4 - First connection

You will be informed [fig E] about either success or failure of the installation process.

[E] Successful installation

Once the installation is finished, you can go into your gallery [fig F]. Login with your webmaster account, and you can reach the administration panel.

[F] Piwigo is installed

1) Warning, your web hosting provider may provide separate connection settings for FTP and MySQL.
2) Most often, web hosting providers allow a single database per customer, but you can create as many tables as you want in the same database. To avoid conflicts with other web applications, or allow several Piwigo installations on the same website, the table names have a prefix. By default, this prefix is ”piwigo_”, but you can change it (only alphanumeric characters are allowed).
